Apocalypse Later Roadshow
The Apocalypse Later Roadshow is a mini-film festival hosted by Hal C. F. Astell of Apocalypse Later. He'll present a curated 90 minute set of quality international short sf/f films on opening night, many of which are still working their way through the festival circuit.
The Apocalypse Later Roadshow began at LepreCon 39 in 2013 and has spread to a variety of conventions across the southwest. This will be Roadshow #32.
At the Movies
At the Movies is a favorite local fandom panel where you will get a sneak peak at trailers for some exciting upcoming movies. After the trailer presentation we will hold a free raffle for movie promotional material (T-shirts, baseball caps, special posters and whatever else the studios have sent us). If you like movies and like free stuff please come on in.
At the Movies has been a mainstay of the Phoenix con scene for decades, initially run by Barry Bard and, in recent years, by Len Berger.
CoKoCon will also feature a special 18+ version of At the Movies, where Len will give you a sneak peek at Red Band trailers for upcoming indie movies, with the more blood and gore the better.
Michael Senft, who runs the Sci-Fridays Book Club at the Poisoned Pen, will be leading discussions on two books at CoKoCon: City of Stairs by Robert Jackson Bennett and The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. Read or listen to them ahead of the event or come in blind, but beware of spoilers! Local Author GoH Beth Cato will co-host the Chambers panel.
It is our pleasure to announce that CoKoCon will be holding a Charity Auction to benefit the Y-Achievers, a YMCA workforce program for disadvantaged young adults. 100% of proceeds will be donated to the Y-Achievers.
Check out our dedicated page for the Charity Auction to see what items will be up for bids. The list is growing all the time.
Mark Greenawalt Masterclass
CoKoCon is proud to introduce a 3 hour masterclass by Mark Greenawalt, From Concept to Cover: A Workflow for Digital Illustration.
Mark may be best known for painting on people, but in this masterclass he will share his process for fantasy illustration. Starting from scratch, he will do a photoshoot with a cosplay model and explain his lighting setup and photography techniques. These reference photos will then be loaded into Photoshop and layered into a fantasy backdrop. He will demonstrate his workflow using masking, layers, pens and the advantages of a Wacom tablet. After making some progress on the image and saving it, he will then share some of the layers and progress scenes from some of his published images, and explain how to make a visually captivating and enticing book cover.
Meet the Guests
On Saturday, our first full day, we'll host a Meet the Guests event, where our MC will introduce each of our Guests of Honor in a social environment. It'll be followed by an Ice Cream Social in the ConSuite, sponsored by the Arizona Penny Dreadfuls.
Nerdy and Naughty Comedy Show
Some of the best comedians in Phoenix (Nathanael Butler, Trejon Dunkley, Kid Ever, Paul Goebel, Ben Lewis and Steve Marek) will bring a high-energy, nerdy humor to CoKoCon with a Nerdy and Naughty Comedy Show on Saturday evening.
This show contains adult humor and is for ages 18 and up.
We'll be hosting a Sketch Off between four fantastic local artists: Artist GoH Steve Rude, Mark Greenawalt, Gilead and Baron Dixon. They'll create whatever comes into their head from audience suggestions and we'll auction off the art for charity at the end of the event.
Steve Rude Live Painting
Artist GoH Steve Rude will be live painting throughout the weekend in the Art Show. This is Steve's only Arizona convention appearance this year, so take advantage of this fantastic opportunity to watch him paint. Pop in and out of the Art Show during the weekend to see his work progress.
